Homeless Man Saves Mercedes-Benz Driver

Not too far from where I live, a homeless bridge dweller saves Benz driver from drowning. I suppose that should be news anywhere, but what I find strange about the story is that the rich young man, who was the victim, got his face in the TrinidadExpress.

His rescuer didn't get his picture on the newspaper - at least not online.

...Lee Pack returned to his shack last night.

His home was lost in a fire two weeks ago. With no money, he and his wife have lived under the bridge during the day, spending nights in an abandoned freight container near the river.

They lost everything in the fire that destroyed the apartment they rented.

Lee Pack said the last thing of value he owned was his steel-tipped boots which were lost during the rescue.

Lee Pack's friend, service station worker Actor Noel, said: "The man in that accident was dead if not for Derrick. It was ironic that a poor, homeless man had to come to the rescue of this rich person."

The incident happened around 3 a.m. near the Cross Crossing Interchange as that car was heading north on the approach to the San Fernando By-Pass.

Lee Pack said he saw the accident happen...

...By the light of a street lamp, Lee Pack said he waded into the river.

"I had a piece of iron. The driver was trying to come out. I tell him hold on the iron, because the gas was leaking and he was starting to panic."...

..."I had to leave my shoes in the mud but I end up pulling him to the bank. He was complaining he had a back pain. But I surprise he wasn't complaining he would dead instead."...

I dunno, it seems to me that if the reporter had this much time to talk the Lee Pack, and since Lee Pack is a victim in his own right, putting a human face to someone who would go help another human being seems pretty important. After all, the majority of the story was about... Lee Pack. I think the Maharaj family could spring for a pair of boots, at the least.

And of course, the thing that someone will tell me when I ask these questions in life is the thing that seems to explain everything: "Dis is Trinidad."
