Suspects Held on George St. Bombing in Trinidad and Tobago

It seems that a suspect has been held in the explosion on George St. here in Trinidad, but with so many copycats in Trinidad and Tobago, it's difficult to say that this is also a suspect for the initial bombing. I heard yesterday that there was another explosion (on Thursday, 8/11/2005), but I haven't been following the news with everything going on in my personal life and I cannot confirm anything.

Reactions to the last bombing were not as intense. People have just rolled with it, which is actually a good thing in one way - there's not much in the way of 'terrorism' in future bombings unless people lose lives. None of these bombings were designed to do much damage, really - which is a good thing. Academically speaking, using the dustbins (garbage receptacles) which are lined with wire would allow for flying fragments to do damage, but in practice there seems to be a blast radius so small that only people standing almost near the dustbins get hurt. It's almost as if someone wants people in Port of Spain to litter. If you've been to Port of Spain, you would see that people hardly use these dustbins anyway, so I really don't know what the point is.

So what's going on in Trinidad? I don't think anyone knows, including the individuals or groups behind the bombs. Elections are coming up, that much is certain. Either way, I am non-partisan and if I am here to vote, I would have to say that neither side has done anything impressive to improve the quality of life for people. Trinidad and Tobago is the richest country in the Caribbean, there is no reason for this to be happening. The politics of the situation are dwarfing the reality, and the politics are symptomatic of a one party system with two sides. The two parties dance macabre; nothing gets done and all the politicians line their wallets.

This country, like many others, seems to need young people running things instead of the dinosaurs. Younger people want to change things, elderly people resist change.

The elderly people are running things, dividing time between doctors and lawyers. Figure it out.
