We Interrupt These Disasters For A Commercial From Our Sponsor
That's right. We're interrupting the disaster side-show here at KnowProSE.com for a bit to talk about the elephant in the middle of the table; about why traffic this week has been higher than usual and why our sponsor - me - isn't too pleased with the way things are going in the world. While this is something that might be more fitting for eAsylum.net, this is my space and in the end I'm responsible for what my space represents. Consider this a KnowProSE.com editorial by the sponsor.
I understand what Zaid said after the London bombing. I empathize.
I've been reporting on the Hurricane Dennis, the Bomb in Trinidad and Tobago, and Hurricane Emily. It's disturbing to look off to the right and see that the most popular stories on this site are fed by some strange human desire to stare at the disasters - human and man-made. And like I wrote about in Hurricane Dennis vs. London Bombing, there are people - real people - that have been affected by these disasters, that will be affected by ongoing disasters, and will be affected by future disasters.
People want to read about these things, so the media gives them what they want - even to the point where media bloggers do whatever they can to raise the ratings of their websites, without facts. These people are dangerous - indeed, with the unwitting idiocy rampant in the media, they feed the tail that wags the dog. Patrick Manning and Basdeo Panday have already started on the bombing, using any sort of possible hoodwink to garner support: Manning claims he got Bomb #34 in 1980/1 while Panday is accusing the PNM of terrorism and, of course, the PNM responds.
Pardon my frankness, but that's a sideshow that continues to keep the people uninformed - and the media reports it as news, even as some 'experts' in the United States do what George W. Bush did with Iraq and 9/11. There was no hard evidence that Iraq had anything to do with 9/11, there still isn't. But because of enough irresponsible journalism magnifying the unsubstantiated opinions of 'leaders', Iraq is what it is today and the United States still has it's foot caught in the trap, bleeding arterially from the wallet even as the competition of the growing economies of India and China leaves the average American's child footing more and more of the bill. An economist told me that the United States borrows from the people of the United States last week, and I laughed at him. The United States is stealing from it's children to do what it is doing now. Look at the deficit per capita.
Isn't it odd that the only entries on the Trinidad Bombing by people of other countries forced their own context on it instead of trying to see what it was? How quick they discount the people from the Caribbean. With a wave of the hand, they made the bombing THEIR bombing, stealing even problems in the region in their egotism. They steal even the wounds so that they can sell the scars.
So the most traffic comes from sites which are sensationalistic about the bombing in Trinidad and Tobago. Meanwhile, fewer people visit related to the natural disasters happening in the Caribbean - a place where people like to come for vacation, but like to ignore the actual people that live in the region. People live in the Caribbean - some for their whole lives. They escape the Caribbean with diplomas and certificates in the hope to do better than to become a person who serves mixed drinks to tourists. The people of the Caribbean are as much to blame for this as anyone else, and the ones who bridge the distance look around and begin to realize why things never change. It's disturbing.
KnowProSE.com isn't about perpetuating that inhumanity; that propaganda of marketers that dehumanizes the people of the region to derive income which they can subsist on, just as they subsist on the promises of politicians so gluttonous that they will starve their own countries to feed their egos and wallets.
KnowProSE.com is about humanizing. It's against that sort of dehumanization. It's against the 'Dark and Blasphemous Minions of Satan' that adopt things so that they can put it into their context such that they profit from it, at the expense of the people. If you're here for sensationalism, you'll be disappointed.
The Caribbean has had a hard week. It continues to, and my thoughs are with my friends in the Dominican Republic, Haiti and Jamaica as Hurricane Emily swings their way - not out of some need to profit from their problems, but to share their problems and make people aware of them. Grenada, still not recovered from Ivan the Terrible of 2004. My thoughts are with my family in Trinidad, with my father and my uncles, aunts, cousins... nieces.
I'm trying to make cake instead of sell it. I'm hungry, I want a better world to grow old in - or at least a world where I can die with some dignity, where I maybe have some children and know that I made an effort to conserve what is good instead of sheering it all down for a profit.
I wonder how many of our forefathers stood by while one of the clan was eaten by a sabre-tooth tiger. Maybe that could be considered a survival trait, but you'll have a hard time convincing me that it's a trait that will allow for the survival of the best of mankind.
It's no secret. KnowProSE.com belongs to an idealistic, romantic, opinionated and principled person. And the funniest thing? Nobody will find this in a search engine because nobody would search for something like this. And maybe that's the real atrocity of mankind.
We now return you to your regularly scheduled disasters.
