I never heard of Amy Thomson before, but I look forward to seeing more books from her. Her style, at least in this book, was simple and yet quite imaginative as well as challenging. She wrote about hard topics in a completely different world. This was an original book for me, reminiscent in a strained way of Anne McAffrey's Dragonriders of Pern series. Exceptionally easy reading, but if you're one of the kooks who burned books about Harry Potter, then you're going to boost the sale of Amy Thomson books. |
Not many books cross lines well, fewer do so with class, and even fewer give you insight into aspects of our own humanity - which the majority of us glimpse at and judge at no personal cost. In an original setting which is skillfully and quickly filled in, Amy Thomson brings to life characters which we have never seen before - yet we see everyday. Each character grows in novel ways - even the very creature on the cover bearing a sail.
I recommend this book strongly, which is not something I normally do. I do this because this bridges our world with a world that exists in one of the most creative minds I have had the pleasure to experience.
