Hurricane Dennis Update

Yesterday I received some emails from friends in Jamaica off of the CIVIC list (which is moderated and therefore not as timely) - apparently everything was going well as of yesterday morning, with flooding being reported in some areas by callers to Jamaican talk-shows.

In Haiti, a bridge has been reported to have collapsed as the category 4 hurricane with 135 mph winds hit. There have been deaths, and I haven't heard anything from people in Haiti that I do know. The Dominican Republic has had thunderstorms, but since the CIVIC list is moderated in the Dominican Republic, infrastructure seems to be doing OK.

The latest news I can get from Jamaica is here, and it seems flooding is the major problem. Fortunately, no reported fatalities so far.

The NOAA 3 day forecast for Hurricane Dennis presently shows a path right through Cuba, and heading toward Alabama, where the United States Media might start following the story more closely.

All of this makes me wonder about whatever happened with CARICOM's interest in ICT Infrastructure Robustness. Lost in the red tape, no doubt. Maybe Hurricane Dennis will make a few people up. Hurricane Dennis is earlier in the season than is expected; but nobody expects disasters.
