The Greyish Saltator, locally called the 'pitchoil' because of its call (in Latin America, it is called 'dichoso fui' for the same reason), is fairly common here on San Fernando Hill. I haven't found anything on it in any literature related to the birds of Trinidad and Tobago - but then I didn't look beyond the single diminutive book my father got me started with.
In the Wikipedia, it is listed as a seed eating bird - something that I will not disagree with, since I often see the remains of green on the sides of their beaks - but I will say that they do eat fruit, and are regular visitors to the feeder in the company of tanagers. Oddly, they are not often seen with the Lesser Antillean Saltators which I have recently been able to distinguish.
They are shy, wary and prefer the brush - coming out only to eat and leave when there are no tanagers for company. When there are tanagers around, they will stay longer - perhaps they gauge their own safety by the tanagers.
