Bananaquit (Coereba Flaveola)

These diminutive birds feed on nectar, and were especially fond of the coconut trees that were in bloom. Unfortunately, the coconut trees posed a risk to safety and had to come down - but flowering plants and trees in the yard, such as the mango tree, give them sustenance. They do not often come to the feeders; there are plenty of other food sources that strike their fancy in the area.
Commonly called the 'Sucrier' or 'Sugarbird', their coloration and markings are very similar to other larger birds. The distinguishing feature for amateurs new to these birds is their beak which suits their diet well. It is small, measuring between 9 and 11 cm long.
