Winning companies today have open and porous boundaries and compete by reaching outside their walls to harness external knowledge, resources and capabilities. Even the stodgy, capital-intensive manufacturing industries are no exception to this rule. Indeed, there is no part of the economy where this opening and blurring of corporate boundaries has more revolutionary potential.

I thought the process of osmosis took place with no obvious action, that the absorption of newness was done with the recipient unaware.

Well, no one ever mentioned....
consciousness. Some people assume that consciousness is necessary or not necessary - but if the result is the same, it would be hard to distinguish between whether consciousness was necessary or not...
Of course, in this context, the writing of the theory is hoped to make the thing more 'porous'. There are a few things in the book that I have started to pull on... some things do unravel.
osmosis.
permeable membrane. porous. not quite the same. perhaps osmosis is the better metaphor.
