Shedding the Weight: How I Lost 50 pounds in 2 months While At My Desk.
It's true. I lost 50 pounds in 2 months. I didn't tell anyone I was trying to lose weight mainly because I wasn't so sure I would be successful. What I did, while simple, was difficult. It involved long hours working at the keyboard and Friday night pizzas. So I'll break it down into some components.
How It Started
One morning I woke up, did my little daily rituals, and tried to put on my jeans. This isn't a normal task for me - I'm usually in shorts while working/playing - so I was surprised when I couldn't put on my jeans. At all. Period. So that morning, in front of a full length mirror, I got pretty critical. I'm 35, soon to be 36, but I'm not old. I have no excuse for being heavy. I often got 'Bravo Zulus' in the Navy for being in shape.
The first, and probably the most important step for me: I decided to lose the weight.
First stop - a new pair of jeans. 34 inch waist. Then some reading. Everyone had always talked about water, for example, as a way to lose weight - but I drink water. One thing I did unearth on water is that when you don't have enough, your kidneys end up doing some of the work of the liver in removing burned fat byproducts. That made sense. So I started drinking more water.
I also read up on the Atkins Nutritional Approach. It's interesting, but it didn't seem to fit what I wanted to do. I did, however, want to induce Ketosis for 2 months, so I decided to follow some of the guidelines. I therefore limited complex carbohydrates, sugars and other things - fairly simple to write, but not so easy to do. Worse, 2 pieces of bacon with an egg-beater omelet just didn't seem right - so I upped the bacon a bit. I am, after all, trying to lose weight - not torture myself.
Last, but not least, I decided to stop eating Kentucky Fried Chicken - probably the only fast food in Trinidad and Tobago - and also stopped drinking soda. Nothing carbonated. To keep track of my weight, I used two systems: My belt notches (which are now back to the smallest setting) and a scale at a local pharmacy which I would walk to. I was shocked to find out that I weighed 225 pounds. No wonder I couldn't fit in my jeans. While I was at the pharmacy, I saw some SlimFast. I read up on it, and thought it was worth a try. I anted up the money and got some Slim-Fast Optima Meal Shake Mix (Chocolate Royale). Who knows. Maybe it would work.
A pound of fat is roughly 3,250 calories. To lose a pound of fat, that has to be burned somehow. Ketosis, exercise and diet were what I decided .
The Social Aspects
In my life, many things are done around meals in restaurants. The first thing I simply had to do was stop eating all the food I had been eating - and that meant giving up many pleasures of the palate. It also meant not having the Sunday brunches with an uncle, hanging out with my 'eating buddies', and also not having temptations in the refrigerator.
My friends and relatives weren't worried about my weight. I was. I still am. So it made socializing simply impossible in some instances. To some people, that would be a high cost. To me, it wasn't. I'm perfectly happy with a quiet place to think.
The Store
My first trip to the grocery store included stocking up on Yogurt, milk (for the slimfast), and bacon to help me get to burn fat. I needed things that would fill me and yet allow me to lose weight. Granola bars and Egg Beaters were two additions that were on impulse. Meats were the staple, to force my body into ketosis and keep it there.
What Worked, What Didn't
After the first week, I realized that yogurt was a bad idea. It tasted good but was not filling or satisfying. I'm sure that there are many people who do find those 8 ounce plastic encased yogurts to be filling and great, but they didn't even cover 'snack' for me. In that respect, they were not only useless - they were a liability. I'd eat 4 at one sitting. That's not good. So no more yogurt.
Granola bars worked, but were temporary fillers. Instead, it was mainly eggbeater omelets and bacon as the meal of the day, and two cups of Slim-Fast Optima Meals a day. I cheated though. I used 16 ozs of milk. I still do.
Exercise? Not that much, really - daily walks and yardwork combined with being tied to the keyboard. One thing I did find was getting a new pair of running shoes was the best thing I did in this regard - walking with extra pounds had been hurting my feet, but I hadn't connected this to my weight.
Weekly checks on weight also helped, because they can be inspiring. When you see weight going down, you feel better because you see results. I never set any goals other than (1) fitting into my jeans, (2) Liking what I see in the mirror. I've got (1). (2) will come.
Will This Work For Other People?
Probably not. Everyone who has been seeing me lately has been asking my advice - surprised at how much weight I have lost, etc. It is a bigger issue than I thought it would be for people - I didn't realize how many people were trying to lose weight. So I tell them what I did, but I also tell them that the single most important thing I did was make up my mind and stuck to it. I'm still sticking to it, heartened mainly by how fast the weight came off (I've been surprised).
What I do know is that everyone is different. I also knew pushing ketosis came with risks, and I kept tabs on myself as best as I could. Rapid weight loss isn't healthy even if the goal is to be healthy - you need to keep an eye on yourself, and while I didn't do it - you should talk to a doctor (I have some medical training, so I wasn't as concerned).
If you want to lose weight, make up your mind. Get a plan together. Stick to it. Monitor yourself. If what you're doing doesn't work, maybe you're in a plateau or maybe what you're doing isn't working. Talk to your doctor. Just because fat is a health risk doesn't mean you should risk your health to lose it.

Congrats:)
That's wonderful, as long as you are happy and healthy.
Shedding weight...
Thanks for the ketosis angle. As a cook, I've been watching my weight for some time now, with a program that has evolved to excersize & slight changes in diet. Partly that has included getting heavy on the protein (for replacement and muscle development).
However, I lost a kidney in an auto accident many years ago, and the one that's left is starting to show signs of stress. Maybe this is why.
So I may have to start eating a more balanced diet myself.
Good luck!
Bob
Hey Uncle
Yeah - more water may be more important for you with one kidney - talk to your quack. I found out that if you don't have enough water to filter the fat byproducts through your liver, it falls to your kidneys... and if your kidney is alone... Just applying common sense to what I've read. Talk to a doc, wouldn't want you dieing of a misprint. :-)
This is what I like about blogs....
Where else could I read of someone's success with a combination of weight loss strategies -- or that my brother lost a kidney some while back?
I have plateaued out at a loss of 25 pounds with slight changes in diet. (That's two sizes down--!) I read labels, not only for fat content (I have been avoiding most all animal fat, with the occassional bacon and such) but for sodium as well. Heavier on the fish than usual. I have become a great fan of olive oil for that essential fat burner. Years ago I learned that milk is good because when the weight comes off, the skin must tighten up or you look like a walking prune. I refuse to drink skim -- but I do drink 2% rather than whole. And instead of yogurt, I have cottage cheese - much more filling than yogurt and you can add finely chopped herbs, or veggies - or even fruit. All in all, it is lower in calories. And I have oatmeal with raisins several times a week -- not the instant stuff that's full of sugar -- the rough cut oatmeal that I cook in the microwave. Fiber is as important as water. I learned that if a person is drinking enough water, the urine should run almost clear, (A goal!) so I keep clean filters in my water purifier and drink a glass whenever I am in the bathroom for any reason.
I built the necessary things in my strategy - chocolate once in a while, non-lowfat creamer in my coffee -- stuff that helps me not feel like I am suffering. What I need to do is go down to the exercise room a few times a week and do some spinning...my urologist wants me to do 50 sit-ups a day on a slant board. (I said, "Hm. In sets of five?") I walk as much as I am able - some days it's a lot, usually it isn't. It is taking me longer to lose this weight than I expected. By my birthday (my 60th!) I hope to lose another 20...another 10 later on.
I don't do well with shakes. I tend to drink them, look around the kitchen and prowl for what's next...
So now you're up to maintenance. Should be easy, compared to the loss! As long as you're happy, as long as you're healthy...What more can a mother ask of a 35 year old?
You Rock
You Rock!
Yay!!!!!!!!
Good to hear that you're taking care of yourself! I'm working on losing a few pounds, but not really dieting... I take a big thermal mug to work and fill it with ice and water. I'm trying to stay away from the soda...and too many goodies. They've started making 10 gal. gatorade at work, but I try to stick with the water-sometimes you just need more! It's getting nicer out, so being outside is easier!
What I think is the problem for most people is they try to take away all the goodies and feel like they're suffering... if I really have a craving for chocolate, I eat some filling healthy stuff and finish with one dove chocolate. I'm full, I've had my goody!
I am more concerned with how I feel and feel about the mirror than what the scale says...according to the charts, my weight is perfect...not to me! I need to be on the lower part of their charts! I feel it in my back and feet.
I'm thinking BLT!
All this talk about losing
All this talk about losing weight and here I am trying to gain some. According to the doctors I need to gain at least 20 pounds.
I tried junk food, chocolate, lost of sweets you name it..... Still no pound seems to stick... So for me it is really the opposite..... Ah well. I guess it is all about the weight. Too much, too little same difference..
Hmmmmm...I should know this.....
Try thick milkshakes - I prefer malted milkshakes - And stop running around playing soccer and jogging and all that stuff! You need to burn fewer calories than you take in. Sit down and read. Lie down and vegetate. Eat bacon sandwiches on buttered whole wheat toast. Use cream (real cream!) in your coffee or tea, or pour it on your cereal. Put cheese on everything. Use mayonnaise. The real stuff. Have ice cream before bed every night. Put butter AND jam on your English muffin. Use olive oil where ever you can, and put avocado in your salad, on your sandwiches, and anywhere else. In other words, do the opposite of what I am doing, and you should be just fine!
How do you keep the weight off
So, what's your maintenance plan?
I think I'm going to do this. My problem is focus. I just hate the idea of taking a year to lose 50 pounds. I just want it off. And I need it off because of a pinched nerve. I love the idea of cutting out social stuff to lose weight - I'd never thought of that. Everybody tells you to manage them, but that's hard to do. I feel I would have more success if I could just focus on this and not have all the other eating pressures.
Thanks for this post.
Keeping it off...
sounds easy, right? Heh. But all you can do is adapt your habits and monitor your weight.
Strangely enough, today I was at a place where I said no to food - and they thought I was being rude. The food just had too much rice... and... I had my meal already planned. My parting shot was, "I didn't lose weight so that people could force it back on me..."
this didnt help me with
this didnt help me with anything i wanted to know! but CONGRATULATIONS on losing your weight! keep on doing good!
Shedding the Weight
That`s so great! I am on a diet right now ... so ..your story is really encouraging. I hope i`ll lose some pounds, too :)
will try this!
I am going to try this, I'm a nurse and I know how unhealthy it is BUT so is being fifty pounds over weight. I came across this about two days ago and I'm starting today. Eight weeks of my life and hopefully I will be down to 140 again. Even if I don't lose fifty I am almost certain that thirty will be gone. Thanks Taran! I will let you know about my success. Nona
