Electronic Arts Planning to Take On SecondLife?
Electronic Arts competing with SecondLife? They probably mean Linden Lab. Marketing News reports:
US-based video games publisher Electronic Arts (EA) is planning to take on Second Life with the launch of an online virtual world. It follows the acquisition of online karaoke business SingShot.
SingShot, a San Francisco-based online karaoke community, allows members to upload their own renditions of famous songs, share recordings, review other members' performances, customise recordings with photos and videos and compete in online contests.
The new company is being merged into EA's Sims division and the Sims brand is expected to be the first to benefit from the acquisition...
So The Sims Online will gain Karaoke ability? But in SecondLife, you can stream audio from servers - which means you can do the same thing, and perhaps better.
No, I think this is a first step toward competition along those lines. But then, I haven't played The Sims Online, so I don't know.
Besides, aren't you supposed to be drunk when singing Karaoke?

Snort
How fun would it be to see EA and LL go head to head building Big World Grids?
I'm pretty sure that the Sims Online Karaoke (should it appear) won't require you to set up a streaming server, figure out how to make it reflect, and then ignore the security and scaling implications of running a public streaming server.
There's a large gap between technically possible and usable, and streaming audio into Second Life definitely hasn't jumped that gap. Some people do it, but then some people write their own metaverse platforms, too.
Yes, but...
Catering for a lack of need for education isn't something I agree with. I think every child should be taught how to start a fire, cook a meal, put out a fire... I think everyone with a driver's license should be able to perform basic maintenance on their car...
But then, if and when we get back to the stone age, there will be people running around with credit cards - only to find out that they should have used them to buy books. :-)
