Tao's Open Source Party, Technical Town Hall
Busy evening in SecondLife... first stop was Tao Takashi's Open Source Release Party, which was attended by all sorts of interesting people. Good thoughts, good vibes - and a good lead into 'listening' to Cory Linden's Town Hall Meeting. The transcript of that meeting is available.
Most interesting for me was the integration of Mozilla code within the SL client. A lot of the things I am interested in doing revolve around the browser, so right now I am just familiarizing myself with the code and looking for bugs. Many people have commented on the neatness of the code which Linden Lab released, and I have to second that. That there is much that can be done within the viewer goes without saying; personally I'd like to see some of the HUDs done within SecondLife actually be built into the viewer and dockable. I haven't delved into the code enough to see how possible that is; work has had me rather... busy. That's why they call it work, I suppose.
There was at least one question about how the open sourcing the server side would affect the economy, though it was focused more on land values. Of course, this is something already mentioned - and it isn't something as easy as most people think, and is probably part of the reason why the server side hasn't been open sourced yet. Duh.
Unfortunately I didn't get to stay as long as the meeting lasted - I had to go check on another interesting event.
Besides, I have the code. :-)
