Reuters - GlobalVoices, Now SecondLife?
Not too long ago, Global Voices and Reuters got together in a strange ceremony which some people didn't like very much. I'm sure I didn't like some parts of it, but I admit the idea of a partnership between an amorphous mass of rebloggers and Reuters has benefits1. So when I read about Second Life Herald article seems like a lot of speculation, but it's speculation on a somewhat interesting basis. When you consider that there are events that parallel the unvirtual world within the virtual world of SecondLife (like SUN's news conference), one has to sit up and pay attention. And maybe this demonstrates that real news does happen in virtual worlds. No, I'm not talking about yard sales by people who resell freebies (we know who you are). I'm talking about real world convergences.
So maybe - as the world becomes more connected, as more people gain access to access these virtual worlds, as more people can sit in one simulator (present maximum around 50 avatars)... maybe the news folks will wither away a little more and not need to depend on people sifting the internet for real news.
I don't have a position on this yet, and I'm unlikely to in the near future. It's watch and wait time.
1 Just before the shindig which assured the Berkman Internet Society some exposure and perhaps more kudos than they deserved, I began to think of Global Voices as a recreation of what was already there.
