Subtitles In Your Own Language?

I was catching up on some reading over at DigitalDivide.net when I came across Jay Bhatt's blog entry, 'Brij Kothari in The Times of India - Google aid for literacy project', which refers to this... and eventually got me to PlanetRead.org.

On the front page, there's a little video with subtitles... for people in India. Interesting. I'd never thought about subtitles done for one's own language. When I was learning Spanish last year, cable television was difficult because the translations were often poor, but as my Spanish improved I began to pick up on it. But I had never considered subtitles in the language itself. That makes sense - to assist with literacy - and hopefully, at some point, with grammar. The grammar, of course, would require that the original grammar to be proper, which in some countries simply ain't gonna happen, but for educational programs this could be a real boon.

That Google is backing it is nice, I suppose, but I'm more interested in the find itself - the subtitles for assisting in literacy. It's something new, and creative. Hopefully fresh ideas like this keep popping up for using existing technology to solve societal problems.

It even be useful for multilingual children... something to mention to my friends at CARDICIS after I check it out some more...
