Boiling Down 'Reflectons of Social Media and Society'

After reading Reflections of Social Media And Society, a friend (who happens to be an editor, hat tip to Andy) pointed out that I seemed to be groping. After some further reflection I decided to condense it to it's purist form - something I couldn't do without the longer post before. It clicked a few moments ago, so before I go off to bed I want to get this down (for better or worse). Here it is in bullet form.

  • Social media is discussion, both qualitative and quantitative.
  • Discussion is comprised of communication and lack of communication (qualitative),  thus participation or lack of participation (quantitative).
  • Lack of communication and participation creates the disenfranchised - those who believe, whether true or not, that they have no avenue for communication.
  • The disenfranchised do what they believe is necessary to meet their goals, for better or worse.
  • The only way to deal with the issue is to continue and increase communication and participation.

That covers everything in a very, very basic way, and is something I will flesh out. To help keep me on track, I'll be using the 'questions answered' aspect of this proposed panel at SXSW (log in and vote for it, would you?) as a template for the fleshing out.
