AIDS, Africa, and - Technology In Churches?
It wasn't too long ago on the DigitalDivide.net email list that someone said something along the lines of, 'putting computers in churches would help decrease AIDs'.
On many different levels, that doesn't make sense to me. But it made me remember a song done by Rage Against The Machine which, because of the genre of music, some might not have heard.
The song, Darkness, was released in 1995.
...AIDS is killing the entire African nation
And a vaccine is still supposedly under preparation
But these governments, they don't mind the procrastination.
They say we'll kill them off, take their land and go there for vacation
My peoples' culture was strong and was pure
And if not for that white greed, it would have endured
My people were left with no choice but to decide
To conform to a system
Their minds enslaved
Their souls encaged
You feel the rage
This brutality can never be undone
But the sun has not yet set
The bass and drums and microphone a threat
That's when you've got to get the cry from the inside
And see that they're responsible for genocide
Responsible for genocide, Responsible for genocide...
10 years later, the vaccine is still under development. While I don't know that it's 'white greed' as much as 'corporate greed' (corporations are equal opportunity employers, or at least they advertise themselves as such...). So maybe the person was right, maybe it is greed that has created the problem... (I do recall the person writing something like that).
But at the end of the day, 10 years later, has there been positive change? And can anyone offer a good case for putting computers in Churches that are not native to Africa... a good case for how Churches and technology can help when part of the problem is that the native culture has been affected? Will technology and more cultural change toward a 'Western' way make Africa less infected by AIDs?
I don't think so. I think maybe jobs would help. Prostitution is one of the problems.
People can't eat technology, and unless they can make money or grow food with it... they can't eat with technology. The basic human needs have to be met first.

damn. you're right, you're
damn. you're right, you're right. how many more years who the fuck knows. i'm not african, so they've got it bad.
