The Beast Is Finally Built.
This is the first entry being posted on the new AMD64 beast - I'm pretty impressed with it so far (though not too impressed with how long it took to get it). Instead of the original specifications, it's got 2 gigabytes of RAM and a 258 meg video card (so I can work at "Oh My God" resolution) and a DVD burner.
Of course, important files are still being copied from the laptop. OpenOffice.org is already installed, as is SeaMonkey (settings from the laptop being copied over this morning). Lots of stuff happening in the background on this machine and... it's not even breaking a sweat. We'll see how it handles the large database scripts over the next few hours... the deadline looms... *sigh*. Busy as hell today because I didn't get this machine earlier and the specifications for what were needed for a project weren't clear... Status quo. :-)
Windows XP cracked me up - that was the initial OS installed, and it insisted that I activate Windows before being able to do anything. It gave no other options. If I didn't activate it, it logged me off! Amazing - a licensed copy of Windows XP being such a pain. Microsoft should be embarassed. No wonder people don't use licensed copies. Hopefully this weekend I will toss Linux on this machine - depends on time constraints. But for you BSA folks out there - I got my license, so buzz off. :-P
Hopefully this evening I'll have some time to take this thing through it's paces. As it is, I don't think that the processor has done any real work yet. :-)
Meanwhile, I'm getting used to a full keyboard and large screen again after a year of working on a laptop. I'd still be using the laptop if it could have handled the stuff I need to do, but...
