The Digital Divide versus The Crap Chasm.
I ran across the weblog of Atanu Dey just now, and found out that Atanu writes good stuff (or at least I like it), so I delved into it more.
I got the title of this entry from Choosing between WCs and PCs, which sort of introduced me to a character named CJ who sounds a lot like myself (including the Do the Taliban have a Buddha Nature? link; I said things similar about the same thing). And it's really funny, because I could have been standing there instead of CJ on this one, and said almost exactly the same things.
Saying the word 'crap' has a way of grabbing people's attention without causing undue problems with the person. 'Poop' is never taken seriously, and 'sh_t' (it's a PG13 weblog here, OK?) is maybe taken a bit too seriously. 'Crap' really is a lovely word in this regard. Try it sometime.
But I digress. CJ made the point I often make... Basic needs must be met first. A hungry person cannot eat bandwidth, and a thirsty person cannot drink a PC. A computer without electricity is useless. And so on.
My joke about Trinidad and Tobago is that we still have people without water, we still have people without electricity... but the State run monopoly has - through brilliant marketing - assured that everyone in this country has a cell phone. I suppose they can use these phones to complain about not having water and electricity at a dollar a minute - until the batteries die.
Yeah. Crap Chasm. I like that.
His latest post reminded me of Lernfreiheit? Lehrfreiheit? (October 08, 2003).
Definitely a person to check in on now and again...
