Music Eclectica

recently commented with some surprise about me listening to Green Day.

Umm. I've always listened to Green Day, even before they had a hit. I'm betting 1,039 Smoothed Out Slappy Hours doesn't ring any bells for the majority of people who listen to Green Day now... but back in the early '90s, a younger rendition of me was down at CBGBs stomping up a storm - I saw Green Day there. The pre-Dookie era. Green Day has aged well without losing the vibe.

But... if people are surprised about me listening to Green Day, check out some of the artists I listen to. From classical to punk to Native American... to stuff that was alternative before there was an 'Alternative Rock'; before it had a name that made it mainstream. Most people haven't even heard of Marillion, but I've been listening to them since 1984/85.

I usually start listening to groups before they 'make it' in a financial sense. During secondary school, a friend of mine (Anil) and I used to copy Billboard's charts and keep track of who made the top 40... and from the top 100, try to predict who would make it into the top 40. That was when Casey Kasem showing up on television or radio was a weekly event.

Eclectic? Last.fm has tracked almost 250 albums I've listened to so far...

I have a general rule that seems to work... don't listen to poorly written music unless you want to dance with women with poor taste in music. And if they have poor taste in music - do you really want to dance with them? :-)
