Kidnapping Soldiers In Trinidad and Tobago

Finally catching up on some local news, I found something of interest - not only was a soldier kidnapped, he was rescued. Right here in San Fernando. Lovely.

...Bisnath, who contacted the police after hearing screams coming from a forested area while on his way to work at the Usine Ste Madeleine sugar factory on Wednesday, spent most of yesterday cleaning around his house for the Christmas holidays.

The screams he heard were those of Army Private Ramnanan, who was snatched in the presence of his wife and one-year-old daughter after he left a neighbourhood grocery near his home at Drayton Street, San Fernando, on Tuesday.

After he was rescued, Ramnanan's uncle, Dillon Jagoo, said Bisnath could look forward to a big reward for his bravery. "He has given us our Christmas. We had no Christmas without Timothy," he said.

Makes one wonder about Crime in Trinidad and Tobago. You can read an interesting 'Year In Review' here.

Supposedly the richest country in the Caribbean, with poor roads and criminals run rampant while politicians... do whatever it is that they do.

Imran Ali of the Trinidad Express writes an interesting article here about 'government' (which is really a grouping of politicians) and it's plan - basically saying, 'it is not enough'. Frankly, it hasn't been enough. 3 year olds and soldiers are getting kidnapped. Meanwhile, Trinidad and Tobago stands in the middle of it's next oil boom.

But what of 2005? Maybe some people will stick around and find out.
