CPB's One-Year Anniversary
The Committee to Protect Bloggers started one year ago yesterday. In that year we've seen the blogosphere continue to grow geometrically and seen many people in countries around the world get in trouble for what they've posted on their blogs. We've also seen a real growth in the attention these dangers have received, not just by bloggers but by the media and by free speech groups--Reporters Without Borders primary among them--and other non-profit groups, such as Global Voices. It is no longer a non-issue. Just today the New York Times, not usually noteworthy for identifying trends first, wrote an editorial on Microsoft's censorship of Chinese blogger Anti's blog. The issue of censoring bloggers is far from resolved. It will be some time before the full complexity of the issue is explored and understood, to say nothing of resolved.
We have had some response to the request for a Managing Director. Because any such director would be responsible for fundraising (including his or her own salary) the position is not ideal for many. We are going to hold off another week before deciding whether or not we have the right person for the job. If not, we will decide what course to take at that point.
Thanks to everyone for recognizing their own interests in our activities.
