CPB is on Hiatus
I'm afraid I have to put the Committee to Protect Bloggers on hiatus, for at least a while. Between my job, my blogand other undertakings, I've been overextended for quite a while. Andwith my current contract ending soon enough, I'm already back indesperate job search mode.
I'veworked the CPB as a full-time volunteer for 11 months now. A majorrealization I've had is that this is a great job but an awful hobby. Asthings currently stand it is unsustainable. After almost 10 months oftrying, the CPB has finally become a nonprofit. But even withtax-exempt status, it will take a great deal of time and effort toraise funds. Getting nonprofit status at this stage is like having run20 miles to reach the starting line of a marathon. I'm not certain thatI have sufficient energy in reserve to do what needs to be done.
If you are an individual or a companywith sufficient funds to sponsor the Committee's activities for a year, please contact us at committeetoprotectbloggers(at)gmail(dot)com.
I don't want to come off excessively grim. I am very glad to havestarted this organization. I think we've made a difference. Ithink we've helped to raise consciousness of the issue not just withthe media and the public at large, but within this increasingly globalcommunity of bloggers. Perhaps a month or two of hiatus, coupledwith a stroke or two of luck, will make the difference. At any rate,I'll be back on January 16 to make an anniversary post.
In themeantime, if you're a blogger in trouble, you may wish to contact theInternet desk at Reporters Without Borders. Their email address isinternet[at]rsf[dot]org.
Thanks to everyone who helped out atvarious points throughout the last year. Merry Christmas, HappyHannukah or whatever else floats your spiritual boat.
Regards,
Curt Hopkins, Director
(Itgoes without saying that I have had to turn off comments and trackbacksto keep the site from turning into a market for unusually specificsexual tastes and poorly made computer peripherals.)
