First OpenDepth.com Beta project completed

Experiments with Alternate Currents of High Potential and High Frequency, by Nikola Tesla is now online. I chose this particular eBook for the first project because it caused a few tests with the Drupal book module, and also resulted in a useful hack on the Drupal book module which allows many more pages.

This, by no means, suggests that OpenDepth.com is out of Beta. It will be out of Beta on January 1st, 2006. For now it's a testing ground for all sorts of things which stretch not only Drupal, but also web content generated from traditional content as well.

Consider These Questions:

Why do traditional books have pages? Is it so that we can remember what page we were on? But that's what the traditional bookmark was for. We have those pages mainly for references, and one of the problems of eBooks is being able to refer to specific pages.

Why are book pages so small? Mechanical limitations, and costs of paper. Obviously we could print books the size of newspapers, but they would be unwieldy and difficult to read.

There are a few more questions popping up as I do this... but it's all quite interesting.

Why Tesla?

And for those of you wondering why I started off with a work by Nikola Tesla - well, the reasons are that (1) I admire Tesla, (2) the language used is not only 'olde', but also in electrician's lingo, and (3) because there is only one eText so far by Tesla.

But don't be surprised if I dig up more stuff...:-) But OpenDepth.com isn't about Tesla. As the Beta site unfolds, it should become apparent what it is actually for.
