I have Word 2007 and it does have a new file format (*.docx), but you can still open/edit/save Word 97-2003 (*.doc) files. You can't open the new format with anything but 2007 and that sucks when you're developing templates for the whole company. I can't tell what the file will look like when opened in the older versions.
